CNU Advanced Seminar (New Urbanism 202): Creating “The 4th Place” – The Ultimate Mixed-Use Environment
Written By: LWLP | June 1st, 2011
In the late 1980s, Ray Oldenburg established a new way of seeing the places where we live, defining the First Place as the home, the Second Place as the workplace, and ThirdPlaces as the “anchors” of community life that foster meaningful and creative social interaction. LiveWorkLearnPlay has created a vision and case for “The 4th Place” – the ultimate mixed-use environment that includes the home, places of work, and the great Third Places. The 4th Place is the confluence of all the key elements in our daily livesand more, allowing us to live, work, learn, and play together in one place. Come listen to international experts in mixed-use development, planning and leasing, as well as city officials, as they discuss how to create the ultimate mixed-useenvironment. Questions that will be tackled include: • What is the impact of mixed-use development on quality of life, business, and community? • What is the right mix of uses for a successful and quality development? • How can successful mixed-use practices be used to revitalize underperforming assets andplaces? • What are the “roll up your sleeves” practices that are working in today’s new economicclimate?
